Every week, after I picked our children up from Kindergarten Religious Education, I asked the ever-popular parent question: "what did you learn in class today?" The responses typically range from "I can't remember" to "mmmunch"
(still eating a last fist full of donut holes from class).
Well today, like tiny mustard seeds that have finally sprouted, I was very pleased to see a spontaneous display of what Sydney and Olivia have learned.

The girls came along with me as I set up the classroom in which I teach third grade Religious Education. The classroom has a huge white board and dry erase markers.
Because there is not a child in creation who can resist filling a blank white board, the girls had a blast drawing on the board - with the sweetest, most tender Catholic "graffiti".
They included the six-year old girl art icons of
rainbows, hearts and smiley faces.
The overall theme of their art is.....Jesus Loves You!

The girls also included a message that I think they must have learned in their Religious Education class:
God loves good words! Sydney and Olivia know good words!

I find it so encouraging to see our childrens' faith displayed in such authentic and natural ways.
The parent of one of my third grade students wrote to me:
"I can tell my son learned a lot in class by the way he acts, the way he speaks and the way he prays."
The way we pray - that's what our faith is all about -
having a deep relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Praise and glory to God for our wonderful Religious Education program and the faith of our children!
Thank you to Mary and Keri, our fearless leaders, and to all of the 100+ teachers and volunteers.
What was the highlight of your year in Religious Education?

One of my favorite moments in the Religious Education year was the end-of-the-year social and launch-into-summer prayer last week. We danced, ate ice cream, and prayed for our families. It was amazing to see how much jumping energy there is in just one third grader.

It's true....our children do learn a lot in our R.E. classes at St. Raph's (even if only by osmosis at times!). My favorite anecdote is when my daughter came home from 4th grade R.E. class and explained to me why I yelled at her when I got really mad - "Mommy, you yell at me when I do something wrong because you love me and want me to act more like Jesus. Thank you!" I ask her how she knew that and she very quietly let me in on the secret..."My religion teacher told me so." Now, as a teenager, I sometimes remind her of "the secret", she smiles, and goes off to make good or at least better choices. Thank you 4th grade CCD teacher!
